The Three Sisters
It was the mid 1940’s , Singapore had been ravaged by war, citizens both local and foreign brutally massacred , families torn apart , streets painted with the blood of the innocent , it was a gruesome sight , a living hell for those still alive. In these dark hours, a glimmer of hope and joy still remained in the people. These people were the ones that lived an optimistic life, the children that lived throughout World War II.
April, May and June, three inseparable sisters, bonded closer together by the horrors of war, lived life normally in Singapore’s darkest hours. This one picture taken, would last a lifetime, bringing back fond memories of childhood, or a reminder of the hardships and sufferings that they had suffered. As their name suggests, they were born in consecutive months, after which their mother had died of labour. Their father had left them soon after, causing them to live an orphan life.
This made their will to survive even stronger, thus enduring the sufferings until the end of war.
However, their journey was not smooth at all. As the saying goes, “life is a journey full of ups and downs”, many obstacles were encountered in their journey to liberation, how they overcame it, or how they stuck together as sisters, and faced the horrors of war. Starting a new journey may not be that hard after all, or maybe it has already begun. This was the happenings of what these 3 girls overcame. This is their story.
It was a stormy night one day back then, the three girls were asleep in a deep slumber, when the worst happened. Japanese soldiers raided their orphanage, taking away whatever was valuable to them, and young girls to have fun with. The three were not spared either. They were separated, and brought to different regions of the country; to them it felt like the end of everything. To have your next and only kin, taken away by force, is a very heart wrenching experience. It was no different for them.
For the next few months, the sisters lived in fear in the hands of the Japanese, although they were separated, their hearts were united as one, and longed to see each other again, this was what made them persevere till the day they were released. One fateful day, sirens were sounded again, the wailing sound signaled another air raid… another air raid… memories of the first few air raids flashed through the citizen’s minds, they prayed hard not to get caught in the blast radius. But no bombs were dropped. The sky suddenly seemed so blue, the Japanese Zero fighter planes were retreating, something the masses longed to see for 2 and a half years.
For the three sisters, still alive and kicking, they still had not found each other. Though separated, they each still had the picture that they had taken together, the only picture that they have, they treasured it and protected it throughout the war, it was tough, but they managed to overcome it. They were brought back to their orphanage, where they longed to meet each other again. And they did, but each carrying the scars of war with them, both physical, and emotional scars.
The power of kinship is very strong, but most of us do not realize that. We take our families for granted day by day, but when we truly need them, we realize that we are as strongly bonded as we thought. Only those that truly manage to comprehend the meaning of kinship, these people have undoubtly led a meaningful life.
